The Nigerian Navy has reported a successful rescue operation where personnel from Naval Security Station, NSS 023, stationed along Cawthorne Channel in Rivers State, saved over 250 passengers from a capsized passenger boat.
According to Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, the Director of Naval Information, the incident occurred around 10.00 p.m. on Sunday, when the boat, MV Precious Emmanuel, departed from a local market in Sangana, Bayelsa, en route to Rivers State.
The boat encountered turbulent waters and collided with a wreck, damaging its hull and causing it to overturn. The vessel, a locally made 3-deck wooden boat, commonly known as “Large Cotonou Boat,” lacked any lifesaving equipment, and none of its passengers were wearing life jackets.
Fortunately, swift action by Nigerian Navy personnel averted a tragedy, with all passengers successfully rescued. This operation aligns with the Strategic Directive of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, which emphasizes ensuring a safe and secure maritime environment in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea.
Commodore Adams-Aliu stressed the importance of life-saving equipment like life jackets and life buoys for maritime operators. He emphasized that the provision and proper utilization of such equipment are crucial for ensuring the safety of lives at sea.
In conclusion, the Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to securing Nigeria’s maritime space, from inland waterways to the outermost limits of the Exclusive Economic Zone, to facilitate legitimate businesses and ensure the safety of all maritime activities.
