The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has revealed its intention to introduce legislation aimed at regulating the activities of telecommunications operators within the state. This announcement came during the Assembly’s proceedings on Monday in Lafia, where Speaker Danladi Jatau received a report from the Joint Committee on Information/Housing and Environment, presented by Chairman Jonah Ali.

Speaker Jatau outlined the purpose of the proposed legislation, stating that it aims to address the mounting of masts and laying of optic fibre cables by telecom companies operating within Nasarawa State. The bill, titled “a bill for a law to make provision for right of way in Nasarawa State and for other matters connected thereto,” is intended to provide a legal framework for managing telecommunications infrastructure within the state.

The Speaker scheduled May 20 for the deliberation of the joint committee’s report, signaling the Assembly’s commitment to addressing this regulatory issue promptly. He emphasized the significance of the bill, noting that it would grant legal permission for individuals, including telecommunications operators and government agencies, to utilize land for investment and other purposes related to telecommunications infrastructure development.

Acknowledging the efforts of the committee members, Speaker Jatau expressed appreciation for their diligence and dedication in carrying out the assigned task. He commended the Speaker and other members of the House for entrusting the committee with the responsibility of drafting legislation to regulate the telecommunications sector in Nasarawa State.

This move by the Nasarawa State House of Assembly reflects a proactive approach to addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by the telecommunications industry’s rapid growth and expansion within the state. By proposing legislation to regulate telecoms operators, the Assembly aims to ensure that telecommunications infrastructure development aligns with the state’s overall development objectives while safeguarding the interests of residents and stakeholders.
