Despite a strong finish from Nollywood in December, Hollywood films dominated the Nigerian box office in 2023, with cinema-goers spending more on foreign movies throughout the year.
According to data shared by FilmOne on April 25, 2024, Hollywood blockbusters like John Wick: Chapter 4, Fast X, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom led the highest-grossing films list, surpassing top Nollywood earners such as A Tribe Called Judah and Malaika.
The disparity in spending highlights the larger production and marketing budgets of Hollywood, enabling immersive experiences with advanced special effects, sound design, and cinematography techniques.
While Hollywood’s global distribution contributes to its success, Nollywood continues to showcase unique Nigerian stories, culture, and language, hinting at potential for growth with expanding international reach.
