Wuruola Owolabi, Chairman of the Lagos Chapter of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), has highlighted the organization’s commitment to celebrating engineering innovation, creativity, and excellence to elevate standards within the profession.

Speaking at the conclusion of the one-month Innovation Month commemorating World Creativity and Innovation Day, Owolabi emphasized the importance of mentoring and rewarding young women in engineering, who represent the future of the profession.

The month-long celebration included a public lecture and mentorship session themed “Embracing Sustainability in Engineering Innovations and Best Practices.” Owolabi expressed gratitude for the participation of Idiat Amusu, a past president of APWEN, whose insights are expected to inspire and shape the future trajectory of engineering.

Recognizing the contributions of young engineers and female engineering students to driving innovation, APWEN presented awards across various categories, including recognition for talented Nigerian children who excelled in the FAEO-WIE Art Competition 2023, showcasing their creativity and passion for engineering.

Owolabi affirmed APWEN’s proactive efforts in establishing an Artificial Intelligence club for female engineering students and young engineers, providing them with technological insights. Additionally, plans are underway to transform the organization’s 200-capacity hall into a hub for resources, technology, and innovation, empowering women and girls in engineering.

In a world marked by challenges and opportunities, Owolabi stressed the pivotal role of women engineers in championing innovation to shape societies and foster sustainable development. APWEN remains dedicated to nurturing creativity and innovation within its organization and the broader engineering community.

Encouraging her colleagues to “Step Out and Innovate,” Owolabi urged them to break barriers, challenge conventions, and devise solutions for a sustainable future. She reaffirmed APWEN Lagos’ commitment to promoting diversity, inclusivity, and excellence in engineering, encouraging all female engineers to embrace innovation and leave an indelible mark on the world.

Together, Owolabi concluded, let’s step out, innovate, and inspire the next generation of women engineers.
