The United Kingdom has committed £1 billion to the global fund, aiming to tackle malaria and related diseases in Nigeria. Dr. Ebere Anyachukwu, Health Adviser to the British High Commission (BHC), announced this significant initiative during World Malaria Day celebrations in Abuja.
Dr. Anyachukwu underscored that the UK government’s contribution would bolster resources mobilized by the global fund to support countries combating various diseases. This financial aid will supplement funds from other donors, collectively managed by the global fund to address malaria and related ailments in Nigeria.
The support will facilitate the provision of essential resources such as insecticides, treated bed nets, diagnostic testing, and chemoprevention, particularly crucial in states where malaria is seasonal.
Highlighting the impact of global funding, Dr. Anyachukwu emphasized the substantial decrease in sickness and mortality rates among children, attributing it to interventions funded by the global fund. He cited WHO statistics indicating a notable decline in malaria-related deaths in Nigeria despite population growth, from an estimated 221,000 deaths in 2008 to approximately 189,000 deaths by 2022.
Dr. Anyachukwu expressed gratitude for the UK’s significant contribution, benefiting 13 Nigerian states and saving numerous lives by granting access to vital healthcare facilities through funded interventions.
