The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has revealed that only 58,000 doctors renewed their annual practice licenses out of the 130,000 registered doctors in the country. Victor Kolawole, the deputy registrar of MDCN, made this disclosure during the induction ceremony of the 2022/2023 Batch B Medicine and Surgery graduates of Edo State University, Uzairue.
Mr. Kolawole attributed the decline in license renewals to the increasing emigration of doctors from the country. He emphasized that only those who renewed their licenses are deemed fit to practice in Nigeria.
Expressing concern over the trend of doctors seeking opportunities abroad, Kolawole urged the new medical graduates to consider practicing in Nigeria. He highlighted the importance of retaining medical professionals in the country’s healthcare system.
Addressing the graduating doctors, Kolawole underscored the need for institutions to increase their training capacity while ensuring that aspiring doctors meet the requisite standards. He pledged support from MDCN to assist in meeting these requirements and maintaining professional standards.
Furthermore, Kolawole advised the new medical practitioners to uphold the integrity of the medical profession and adhere to regulations set by the council. He emphasized the council’s mandate to regulate practitioners’ activities and enforce disciplinary measures when necessary.
