Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has pledged the Federal Government’s commitment to relocating several correctional centers to enhance space, security, and infrastructure.

Tunji-Ojo made this assurance during a visit to the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre, following the recent jailbreak incident where 119 inmates escaped due to a rainstorm that damaged the facility.

Highlighting the overcrowding challenges faced by correctional centers, the minister emphasized the need to transfer facilities to more suitable locations away from city centers for improved conditions.

He noted that the Suleja facility, built in 1914 to accommodate 250 inmates, was currently housing 499 individuals, underscoring the urgency for relocation.

The minister stressed the government’s commitment to reforming the correctional system, ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future.

Addressing the need for timely dissemination of information about facility conditions, Tunji-Ojo emphasized accountability, stating that responsible actions are crucial in preventing similar occurrences nationwide.

He reassured the public of the government’s determination to recapture the escaped inmates and prevent future jailbreaks across the country.
