The Delta State government has concluded its 2022–2023 bursary program, providing financial support to 30,116 students hailing from the state and enrolled in higher education institutions nationwide.

Dr. Godfrey Enitaon, the executive secretary of the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board, confirmed that approximately 30,000 students of Delta State origin studying in 195 tertiary institutions across the country have benefited from the program. Among the institutions, Delta State University Abraka emerged with the highest number of beneficiaries (8,330), followed by Delta State Poly Otefe-Oghara (2,686 beneficiaries) and the University of Benin (3,650 beneficiaries).

Acknowledging Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s authorization for the disbursement of funds, Dr. Enitaon expressed gratitude for the initiative’s execution.

The eligibility criteria for the bursary program required applicants to be Delta State indigenes enrolled in 200 level or above, possess a National Identification Number (NIN), and maintain a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.2 or above. Out of the 42,269 students who applied for the Students Special Assistance Scheme (Bursary), only 30,116 met these requirements.

The program was inclusive, extending support to students enrolled in federally and state-owned universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, schools of nursing, health, monotechnics, as well as private universities and polytechnics. This inclusivity aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s “Opportunities for All” agenda, the second pillar of his M.O.R.E. agenda.

The board emphasized Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to the welfare of Delta’s youth, highlighting the importance of the bursary award in facilitating their academic pursuits. Recipients were urged to remain dedicated to their studies and serve as commendable representatives of Delta State.
