The withdrawal of Nigerian military troops from Allawa community in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State has prompted widespread panic and forced residents to flee. This decision comes after a deadly ambush targeted military personnel in the area, raising concerns about escalating violence. Residents, including women and children, have evacuated their homes and embarked on foot journeys of at least 50 kilometers to seek refuge in safer locations.
According to reports, the military camp in Allawa has been closed, and soldiers have been withdrawn following the recent ambush. This abrupt departure has left the community vulnerable to further attacks by bandits and terrorists. The withdrawal was reportedly unexpected for residents, who relied on the military presence for protection against the ongoing threats.
The incident that precipitated the troop withdrawal occurred when a military vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Allawa-Pandogari road, resulting in casualties among the military personnel. This event, coupled with other recent attacks in neighboring communities, prompted the military to reassess its strategy in the region.
Niger State Commissioner for Homeland Security, Brigadier General Bello Abdullahi Mohammed (RTD), confirmed the troop withdrawal, attributing it to the military’s efforts to devise new strategies to combat insecurity. He assured residents that the withdrawal was part of administrative rearrangements and that the military would return with strengthened measures to address the security challenges in the area.
The departure of the military has left residents feeling exposed and fearful for their safety, especially considering the recent uptick in attacks by armed groups. Many residents have voiced their concerns about the lack of protection in the absence of military presence, emphasizing the urgent need for effective security measures to be implemented to safeguard their communities.
