Nigeria’s House of Representatives has expressed deep concern regarding recent allegations of discrimination against Nigerians at a supermarket owned by Chinese nationals in Abuja.

The House Committee on China/Nigeria Parliamentary Friendship Group has taken steps to intervene in the matter, urging Nigerians to remain calm while full-fledged investigations into the allegations are conducted.

Reports indicated that a Chinese supermarket situated on Umaru Yar’Adua road, within the China General Chamber of Commerce in Abuja, allegedly implemented a discriminatory policy preventing Nigerians from patronizing the store.

Despite the owners’ denial of these allegations, the Nigerian Government, through the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, sealed the supermarket on Monday.

In response, the Nigerian Parliament released a statement on Wednesday, jointly signed by Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu, Chairman of the House Committee on China/Nigeria Parliamentary Friendship Group, and the House Spokesperson, Hon. Akin Rotimi Jnr. The statement condemned any form of discrimination and emphasized the significance of the mutual relationship between Nigeria and the Republic of China.

The Parliament’s intervention underscores its commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of Nigerians and fostering positive relations between Nigeria and China. It also highlights the importance of addressing allegations of discrimination swiftly and effectively to ensure equality and fairness for all.
