The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has initiated the diversion of flight operations from Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos to the D Wing, following a fire outbreak at the facility. The fire reportedly broke out at the E54 Passenger Air Bridge within the domestic wing of the Airport.
According to a press statement by FAAN’s director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, the incident occurred at 5:29 am on Thursday morning. The statement, released to the press, indicated that Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) swiftly responded to the situation, managing to bring the fire under control by 06:41 am. Efforts to ventilate the smoke from the building were underway at the time of the report.
Initial assessments suggest that the fire may have originated from sparks emanating from an electrical unit. However, a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident. Orah emphasized the importance of ascertaining the root cause of the fire to prevent future occurrences.
As a precautionary measure, all flight operations at Terminal 1 of MMIA have been redirected to the D Wing. FAAN assured that further details would be provided as the situation unfolds.
