The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State has entered into a partnership with the National Commission for the Coordination and Control of the Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NATCOM) to address the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
Olatunde Maku, the NSCDC Commandant in Anambra, revealed this during a courtesy visit by Dr. Ebere Anozie, the NATCOM Commandant in the state, in Awka.
Maku emphasized the role of illegal arms in fueling criminal activities and expressed the NSCDC’s commitment to collaborating with NATCOM to stem the circulation of illegal arms, thereby ensuring a safer environment conducive to peace.
Acknowledging potential challenges within the system, Maku underscored the importance of the collective effort in tackling the issue of illegal arms possession.
In response, Anozie highlighted NATCOM’s mandate to prevent the influx of illegal arms, ammunition, and chemical weapons into the country, in alignment with international treaties, including Nigeria’s commitment to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) treaty since 2006.
Anozie called upon the NSCDC to leverage its expertise in internal security to support NATCOM in preventing and combating the proliferation of small arms, light weapons, and related materials nationwide.
