Professor Otoikhian delivered the 14th inaugural lecture series at the Aliko Dangote Auditorium of Edo State University Uzairue. Titled “Green Diesel For A Green Future,” the lecture emphasized the importance of incorporating biodiesel technology into Nigeria’s automotive industry.
Prof. Otoikhian underscored the need for Nigerian automobile companies to emulate the biodiesel technology adopted by advanced nations. He emphasized that this initiative could help Nigeria regain its status as the giant of Africa and contribute to a more sustainable future, aligning with global efforts to mitigate climate change.
The professor highlighted biodiesel as a promising alternative fuel source, noting its flexibility in feedstock and catalysts compared to fossil fuels. He particularly emphasized the potential of wasted-edible oil from restaurants as a cost-effective and widely available raw material for biodiesel production.
Despite the increasing global demand for renewable energy sources, Prof. Otoikhian lamented the lack of significant progress in biodiesel production in West Africa and other African nations. He urged stakeholders to overcome obstacles and accelerate the adoption of renewable energy technologies to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
In addition to biodiesel, the lecture also discussed the importance of bioethanol as a widely used biofuel with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Prof. Otoikhian emphasized the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of biodiesel production, highlighting its non-toxic nature and lower emissions compared to traditional fuels.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of Edo State University Uzairue, Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, praised the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and technological innovation. He emphasized the university’s role in fostering knowledge across various disciplines and its dedication to embracing technology-driven educational resources.
As Nigeria seeks to transition to more sustainable energy sources, the call to embrace biodiesel technology echoes the global shift towards renewable energy and underscores the importance of environmental stewardship in national development efforts.
