In an interview in Calabar on Monday, Cross River’s transport commissioner, Ekpenyong Cobham, disclosed that a mere five per cent of the commercial drivers in the state are trained and certified.

Mr. Cobham’s statement came in response to protests by some minibus drivers against the state government’s directive to paint their vehicles a uniform color and obtain security coding.

Expressing concern, Cobham highlighted the lack of professionalism among many commercial transport operators in the state. He noted that a significant portion of drivers transitioned from motorcycle riding to tricycle operation before becoming bus drivers, often lacking proper licenses and driving training.

He criticized past administrations for prioritizing revenue generation over safety and regulatory enforcement, leading to a neglect of essential training and certification for drivers.

Asserting the government’s objective, Cobham emphasized that the measures were aimed at promoting orderliness and enhancing safety within the transport system for the benefit of all residents.
