Former President Goodluck Jonathan has emphasized the imperative establishment of state police as a non-negotiable entity for Nigeria’s security framework.

Speaking at the ongoing dialogue on state police organized by the House of Representatives, Jonathan stressed the need to shift the conversation towards preventing abuse by governors while acknowledging the challenges associated with state police implementation.

Citing widespread acceptance during the 2014 National Conference, Jonathan underscored the role of state police in addressing kidnapping and other forms of insecurity, emphasizing its potential to curb criminal activities.

Jonathan’s position diverges from that of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who opposed the establishment of state police. Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker of the House, Ben Kalu, highlighted the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, citing the staggering sums paid in ransom to kidnappers as evidence of the growing threat posed by criminal activities.
