The Federal Government has made a compelling call for the creation of an African Artificial Intelligence (AI) Council to streamline AI regulations across the continent. Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, made this announcement during the conclusion of a four-day international workshop on National Artificial Intelligence and Strategy for Nigeria.

Tijani emphasized the need for uniform regulations and market standards to govern the deployment of AI in Africa. He stressed that establishing an African Council for AI would facilitate seamless transactions, shared experiences, and mutual opportunities and benefits.

Furthermore, Tijani revealed that the government has secured $3.5 million as seed funding for its AI strategy from various partners, both local and foreign. Notable contributors include the United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, Meta, Google, Microsoft, Luminate, Lagos Business School, Data Science Nigeria, and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

The funding, comprising $1.5 million in direct financing and an additional $2 million invested by 21st Century Technologies in the pilot program, demonstrates significant support for Nigeria’s AI initiatives. Tijani highlighted the establishment of an AI Collective for Growth initiative led by NITDA, which will receive funding from partners over the next three years.

Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of NITDA, expressed optimism about the potential impact of Nigeria’s AI strategy. He underscored the importance of seizing the opportunities presented by AI, stating that it could have a transformative effect similar to the internet.

Inuwa urged stakeholders to prioritize the development of AI strategies, emphasizing that the time to act is now to ensure Nigeria’s active participation in the AI revolution.

The government’s commitment to fostering AI development and innovation underscores its dedication to shaping Nigeria’s digital future and leveraging technology for economic growth and social development.
