Presidential CNG Initiative Poised for Implementation: Transforming Nigeria’s Transportation Sector

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for a more sustainable and cost-effective energy future takes a significant step forward as the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI) gears up for rollout. Launched in response to the removal of fuel subsidies in May 2023, the initiative aims to provide cheaper, safer, and more environmentally friendly energy solutions, particularly for mass transit.

With an allocation of N100 billion from the N500 billion palliative budget, the PCNGI is set to procure 5500 CNG vehicles, 100 electric buses, and over 20,000 CNG conversion kits. Additionally, the initiative will spur the development of CNG refilling stations and electric charging stations across the country.

Led by oil and gas expert Michael Oluwagbemi, the PCNGI committee has laid the groundwork for critical reforms to enable the transition to CNG and electric vehicles. With President Tinubu’s approval of tax and duty waivers in December 2023, the private sector has responded with over $50 million in investments in refueling stations and conversion centers.

The initiative prioritizes safety, with the development and approval of a comprehensive safety policy document comprising 80 standards and regulations for CNG conversions. This emphasis on safety will ensure that the transition to CNG vehicles is conducted reliably and securely.

The deployment of CNG buses and tricycles marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s transportation industry, with plans to have at least one million natural gas-propelled vehicles on the roads by 2027. This transition away from more expensive diesel and PMS vehicles will reduce air pollution and align with Nigeria’s commitments under the Paris Climate Accord.

Key players in the private sector, including JET, Mikano, Mojo, and Brilliant EV, are instrumental in the assembly and production of CNG buses and electric vehicles. With over 600 buses targeted for production in the first phase and plans for thousands of tricycles, the initiative promises to create thousands of new jobs and open up a new industry.

Collaboration with private sector entities like NIPCO, BOVAS, and MRS will ensure the availability of refueling services and conversion centers nationwide. The NNPC Limited is also joining the initiative, further bolstering efforts to expand CNG infrastructure across the country.

To facilitate monitoring and accessibility, the PCNGI will launch the MYCNG.NG App, providing information on CNG conversion and refueling sites nationwide.

As the PCNGI collaborates with various stakeholders to realize President Tinubu’s vision, including transport unions and financiers, Nigeria is poised to lead the way in transitioning to cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions in the transportation sector.
