UN Human Rights Office Calls for Restraint Amid Rising Tensions in Middle East

The United Nations Human Rights Office has appealed for restraint from all parties involved following a suspected Israeli attack on Iran early Friday.

Spokesman Jeremy Laurence, speaking from Geneva on Friday, refrained from explicitly naming Israel or Iran but urged all sides to de-escalate the situation. He emphasized the need for third-party states, particularly those with influence, to intervene to prevent further deterioration in an already precarious situation.

While the agency currently lacks detailed information on the attack, reports from U.S. media suggest that Israel launched at least one missile at Iran. However, Iran minimized the impact of the attack, stating that no significant damage occurred.

The recent strike came in response to a massive assault by Tehran on Israel over the weekend, involving over 300 drones, cruise missiles, and rockets. This retaliation followed an attack on an Iranian diplomatic compound in Damascus on April 1.

Expressing deep concern over the potential humanitarian and human rights consequences of escalating tensions, Laurence underscored the need to avoid a wider conflict in the Middle East.
