Emiliano Martinez emerged as the hero in a thrilling penalty shootout as Aston Villa secured a dramatic victory over Lille to advance to the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League.

The Argentine goalkeeper, renowned for his heroics, replicated his World Cup-winning form by saving crucial penalties from Nabil Bentaleb and Benjamin Andre, sealing a 4-3 shootout triumph after the quarter-final ended 3-3 on aggregate.

Martinez’s performance was not without drama, as he silenced the taunting French crowd and incurred a yellow card during the shootout, adding to the tension. However, his booking from normal time did not carry over, allowing him to stay on the pitch and propel Villa into their first European semi-final since 1982.

Despite being outplayed for much of the second leg in France, Villa rallied with a late goal from Matty Cash to force extra time. Martinez’s heroics ultimately secured victory, extending manager Unai Emery’s impressive record of eight consecutive European quarter-final victories.

While Villa showcased one of their finest performances of the season in a recent win over Arsenal, Lille posed a formidable challenge, leveling the aggregate score early in the match with a quality goal from Yusuf Yazici.

Martinez’s crucial saves, including a brave block to deny Andre’s close-range header, ensured Villa’s progression, highlighting the team’s resilience and determination on the European stage.
