Niger State has brought charges against 33 individuals suspected of violating the state government’s directive to suspend mining activities in light of prevailing security challenges across the nation.
The arrests occurred during an unannounced inspection of various mining sites conducted by officials from the Niger State Ministry of Mineral Resources.
Reports indicate that nine suspects were apprehended in the Three-Arm Zone, seven in M.I Wushishi, and 17 in the T. Mama Mandela area. Additionally, authorities seized 11 water pump generators and one motorbike during the operation.
Alhaji Garba Sabo Yahaya, the commissioner of the ministry, led the enforcement team, emphasizing that the initiative aims to regulate mining operations and ensure adherence to established regulations for the safety and security of citizens.
Yahaya underscored that the arrests align with the directives of the governor, highlighting the ministry’s unwavering commitment to enforcing the mining suspension.
Furthermore, Yahaya asserted that the ministry would take decisive measures against any individual involved in mining activities, irrespective of possessing a license. He assured thorough investigations into all mining operations across the state.
Expressing concern over the involvement of children in mining endeavors at the expense of their education, the commissioner issued a stern warning against such practices.
