German authorities have detained two individuals suspected of espionage for Russia, with one allegedly involved in discussions about potential sabotage activities, as disclosed by prosecutors.
The suspects, identified as Dieter S and Alexander J in accordance with privacy laws, were apprehended on Wednesday in Bayreuth, Bavaria, on charges related to espionage.
Dieter S stands accused of sharing information regarding potential sabotage operations in Germany with an individual linked to a Russian intelligence agency since at least October of the previous year. These actions were purportedly aimed at undermining Germany’s military support for Ukraine.
According to prosecutors, Dieter S expressed readiness to carry out explosive and arson attacks, primarily targeting military infrastructure and industrial sites within Germany. He reportedly gathered intelligence on potential targets, including facilities of the U.S. armed forces, and conducted reconnaissance missions by scouting and photographing selected objects, such as military transports.
The second suspect, Alexander J, is alleged to have aided Dieter S from March 2024 onwards.
These arrests underscore the persistent concerns regarding espionage activities and foreign influence within Germany, prompting authorities to respond decisively to address potential security risks.
