Akwa Ibom Governor Establishes Committee to Resolve Traditional Rulers’ Dispute

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has formed a seven-member committee comprising traditional rulers to address the ongoing conflict stemming from amendments to the State Traditional Rulers Law. During a gathering with traditional leaders at the Executive Council Chambers in Government House, Uyo, the Governor assured them of his commitment to collaboratively resolve the issues arising from the amended law.

Governor Eno emphasized his administration’s desire to avoid interference in matters concerning esteemed traditional rulers. Therefore, the committee’s mandate is to recommend solutions regarding the rotation of positions and submit their findings within two weeks. He expressed gratitude to Barrister Ekpenyong Ntekim for agreeing to collaborate in resolving the matter outside the courtroom.

The Governor highlighted the consensus among traditional rulers on the principle of rotation for the President-General position of the Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers. He reiterated the government’s stance of impartiality and non-involvement in the internal affairs of the traditional institution.

Chairman of the State Traditional Rulers Council, Odidem Bassey Etim Edet, commended the Governor for his handling of the situation and endorsed the establishment of the committee as proposed. The initiative reflects a concerted effort to find amicable solutions and foster harmony within the traditional ruling structure of the state.
