Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South Senatorial District and serving as the Senate Minority Leader, has criticized the recent call for the resignation of the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Lliya Damagum. Moro described the demand as ill-timed and unwarranted, emphasizing that it does not reflect the sentiments of PDP federal lawmakers, particularly PDP Senators.
Reacting to the call made by Hon. Ugochinyere Ikenga, representing Ideato Federal Constituency in Imo State, Moro stated that such calls, especially ahead of the long-awaited National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, only serve to cause unnecessary turbulence within the party. He stressed the importance of the upcoming NEC meeting as an opportunity for members to discuss crucial party matters and national issues comprehensively.
Regarding the position of the National Chairman, Moro emphasized the significance of adhering to the party’s constitution, which provides for the deputy chairmen to step in when there is a vacancy. He opposed suggestions to open up the position to other regions, maintaining that it should remain within the North Central zone as prescribed by the party’s constitution.
Expressing concern over the current state of governance under the All Progressives Congress (APC) government, Moro criticized the administration’s policies, citing increased hardship for Nigerians despite reported improvements in certain economic indicators. He highlighted the rising cost of living, coupled with the insensitivity of the government, particularly in the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
Addressing the role of the PDP in opposition politics, Moro defended the party’s efforts in holding the APC government accountable for its actions. He emphasized the importance of constructive criticism and expressed optimism that the PDP would reclaim its electoral victories in the upcoming elections, provided members collectively strategize and work towards restoring the party’s prominence.
In conclusion, Senator Moro underscored the need for discipline within the party and highlighted the responsibilities of various party organs in addressing misconduct by members. He expressed confidence in the PDP’s ability to bounce back and urged members to focus on rebuilding the party’s reputation and reclaiming its lost glory.
