IGAD Urges End to Sudan Conflict, Emphasizes Negotiated Settlements

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has issued a call for all parties involved in the conflict in Sudan to cease hostilities and prioritize negotiated political resolutions. In a statement marking the first anniversary of the prolonged conflict in Sudan, IGAD’s Executive Secretary, Workneh Gebeyehu, emphasized the importance of halting hostilities and pursuing peaceful negotiations.

Gebeyehu underscored the urgency of addressing Sudan’s dire humanitarian situation and widespread human suffering, urging stakeholders to collaborate with IGAD and its designated Special Envoy to achieve a nationwide cessation of hostilities. He stressed that such efforts would facilitate a sustainable ceasefire and the implementation of humanitarian measures to alleviate suffering in the country.

IGAD reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to working with the African Union, neighboring countries, and relevant Sudanese stakeholders to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.
