Vietnamese real estate tycoon Truong My Lan has been sentenced to death for her involvement in a massive fraud case. The 67-year-old chair of Van Thinh Phat, a prominent real estate company, was convicted by a court in Ho Chi Minh City for orchestrating fraud amounting to $12.5 billion, nearly 3% of Vietnam’s 2022 GDP.

Lan was accused of illegally controlling the Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank between 2012 and 2022, using it to divert funds through ghost companies and paying bribes to government officials. Her arrest in October 2022 was part of Vietnam’s anti-corruption drive, known as the Blazing Furnace campaign, which has targeted high-profile individuals, including former President Bo Van Thuong.

The scale of Lan’s trial has shocked the nation, highlighting the extent of corruption within Vietnam’s real estate sector. The fallout from the case has impacted the industry, with numerous property firms withdrawing from the market, developers offering discounts and incentives to attract buyers, and a significant number of commercial properties remaining vacant despite falling rental prices.

Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has vowed to continue the anti-corruption fight, signaling a long-term commitment to addressing systemic corruption within Vietnam.
