The Ebonyi State Police Command has officially verified the tragic killing of a police officer during a brazen assault on the Ishieke junction police checkpoint at 7:15 am yesterday.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, the assailants, believed to be hoodlums, targeted the checkpoint in a daring attack. Operating from an ash-colored Sienna vehicle, the perpetrators opened fire indiscriminately at the officers stationed at the checkpoint.
Ukandu detailed that despite the officers’ valiant efforts to repel the attackers, one officer sustained fatal injuries in the exchange of gunfire. Additionally, the assailants set a patrol vehicle ablaze before fleeing the scene.
In response to the distressing incident, the Commissioner of Police swiftly mobilized police personnel to the location, initiating a thorough investigation and launching a manhunt to apprehend the fleeing perpetrators.
“Following the deployment of police operatives to the area, calm and normalcy have been restored,” assured Ukandu, emphasizing the police force’s commitment to maintaining peace and order in the state.
Concluding the statement, the Commissioner of Police urged citizens to collaborate with law enforcement by providing any pertinent information that could aid in the apprehension of the assailants. He reaffirmed the command’s unwavering determination to combat crime and safeguard the lives and properties of residents in Ebonyi State.
