Former President Muhammadu Buhari, along with the nation and the family of the departed, expresses profound sorrow over the loss of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, a distinguished politician who served as the inaugural civilian Governor of Abia State and later as Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation during Buhari’s administration. The announcement came through a statement issued by Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on Thursday.

In response to the news of Dr. Onu’s passing, a figure pivotal in the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), the party that once endorsed Buhari as its presidential candidate, Buhari conveyed heartfelt condolences, describing Onu as “one of its most outstanding scientific minds and intellectuals.” Buhari continued to extol Dr. Onu’s stature as an “intellectual giant,” expressing empathy for his family, the government and people of Abia State, and the entire nation. He concluded his message with a prayer for the repose of Dr. Onu’s soul.
