Following the sentencing of celebrity transgender figure Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, to six months in prison for Naira mutilation, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced that Bobrisky will be housed in the male section of its custodial facility, where he will be protected against sexual predators.
Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court delivered the verdict on Friday, finding Bobrisky guilty of Naira abuse.
Despite Bobrisky’s public discussions about his gender transition, including identifying himself as male in court, the correctional service stated that he will be placed in a male-designated facility, adhering to the information provided during court proceedings.
While concerns have been raised regarding Bobrisky’s safety due to his gender identity, correctional officers have assured that he will receive adequate protection from potential harm. Addressing worries about his vulnerability to sexual assault from other male inmates, a spokesperson for the correctional service in Lagos emphasized that Bobrisky will be safeguarded.
Bobrisky’s continued social media activity, including recent suggestive posts on Instagram, has drawn attention. With over five million followers on Instagram, he has openly shared his gender transition journey, expressing satisfaction with the process.
