More than 20,000 residents and business owners in Ughiole and Ubiane communities in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State have submitted a petition to the National Assembly, calling attention to a nine-month power outage allegedly caused by Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) Plc.
In the petition addressed to Hon. Esosa Iyawe, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions, the residents lamented the extended period without electricity and accused BEDC of negligence. The blackout, they claim, is a result of vandalism that occurred nine months ago, damaging vital infrastructure.
Adamu Deco Suleman, speaking on behalf of the communities, detailed the challenges faced by residents due to the lack of electricity, including adverse effects on businesses and security concerns. Despite efforts by the communities to raise funds for repairs, they have been unable to meet the estimated cost of over N8 million.
Suleman expressed disappointment with BEDC’s response, alleging indifference and neglect. He urged the National Assembly to intervene by conducting a thorough investigation into the matter and compelling BEDC to provide a replacement for the damaged infrastructure promptly.
Furthermore, the petition called for compensation for affected residents and assistance in restoring power to the communities. It emphasized the negative impact of the blackout on local economy and security, urging swift action to address the situation.
