The Edo State House of Assembly has ousted Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu from office, culminating in a tumultuous saga of political rifts and power struggles within the state.
Shaibu’s impeachment came to fruition following the adoption of a report by a seven-man investigative panel, convened by the Assembly to scrutinize allegations of misconduct against him. The process, initiated the previous week, reached its climax with a resounding vote that sealed Shaibu’s removal from his position.
Retired Justice Stephen Omonua spearheaded the seven-man panel responsible for the investigation.
Roots of Discord: Shaibu’s Ambitions
The ousted Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, attributes the genesis of his downfall to his aspiration to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki in the upcoming gubernatorial elections. Shaibu revealed that his decision to contest for the governorship irked Governor Obaseki, leading to a deterioration in their relationship.
Shaibu asserted that despite interventions from prominent individuals, including the Benin monarch, Governor Obaseki remained resolute in his determination to oust him from office.
According to Shaibu, the strained relationship escalated to the extent that he was relocated from the Government House to a different office location, symbolizing the widening chasm between him and the Governor.
The Rift Widens: Political Maneuvering and Imminent Threats
The feud between Shaibu and Obaseki further intensified over political allegiances and maneuvers. Shaibu accused Obaseki of attempting to stifle his ambitions by allocating meager funds to his office in the state budget, a move perceived as a deliberate attempt to undermine his influence.
In a recent television interview, Shaibu underscored his determination to exercise his democratic right to contest in the elections, despite Obaseki’s disapproval. He lamented the deteriorating relationship with the Governor, citing unsuccessful attempts at reconciliation.
Conversely, Governor Obaseki accused Shaibu of disloyalty and orchestrating plans to usurp power by leveraging his political connections. Obaseki highlighted Shaibu’s alleged discussions in Abuja about manipulating the House of Assembly to favor his political agenda, which he deemed as a betrayal of their partnership.
Shaibu’s involvement in a factional primary election further exacerbated tensions within the party, as he contested the legitimacy of the process that favored Obaseki’s preferred candidate.
Looking Ahead: Uncertain Future in Edo Politics
Despite facing impeachment threats and political marginalization, Shaibu remains resolute in his quest for gubernatorial candidacy, emphasizing his constitutional right to contest. He warns of potential repercussions for the party if his candidacy is not acknowledged, hinting at a fracture within the PDP’s support base in the state.
As Shaibu continues to voice his grievances and assert his political aspirations, many observers anticipate further political upheaval in Edo State. With Governor Obaseki determined to consolidate power and Shaibu unwavering in his ambitions, the stage is set for a protracted battle for political dominance in the state.
