Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, representing Bende federal constituency of Abia State, has affirmed the House’s commitment to debating the recent electricity tariff hike upon the resumption of plenary later this month.

The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved a substantial increase in electricity prices for Band A customers, raising concerns about its impact, particularly amidst a nationwide decrease in electricity supply.

Kalu, speaking on a special edition of “Ben Kalu’s Mandate” on FLO FM, Umuahia, Abia State, underscored the need for parliamentary intervention in response to public outcry. He emphasized the House’s determination to adopt a balanced approach to address the issue, considering both the interests of investors and the welfare of citizens.

Highlighting the importance of essential services like electricity, Kalu cited a specific case involving the University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital, which faced disconnection due to the tariff hike. He assured that the House would thoroughly examine the matter upon resumption, seeking a win-win solution to safeguard both investors’ interests and the well-being of Nigerians.

Kalu reiterated the House’s commitment to finding a resolution that ensures fairness and alleviates the economic burden on citizens while maintaining a conducive environment for investors.
