The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is set to launch its Customs Analytical Laboratory, as announced by the Comptroller-General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, during a media briefing at the Service’s Headquarters in Abuja. This initiative aims to bolster the NCS’s capacity to detect and prevent smuggling, counterfeit goods, and other illicit activities at the ports.
Scheduled to take effect between the second and third quarters of 2024, the Customs Analytical Laboratory will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with Customs regulations by providing accurate and reliable testing and analysis of imported and exported goods. Its primary objective includes determining the authenticity, composition, quality, and safety of goods through various technological-based tests, including assessments of chemical composition, product integrity, and adherence to regulatory standards.
Adeniyi emphasized that leveraging state-of-the-art technology and expertise through the Customs Analytical Laboratory will significantly enhance the NCS’s ability to safeguard public health, safety, and economic interests. By implementing advanced testing and analysis procedures, the NCS aims to curb smuggling, combat counterfeit goods, and address other illicit activities effectively.
This initiative underscores the commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service to uphold regulatory standards, promote transparency, and ensure the integrity of goods traded through the ports. Through the establishment of the Customs Analytical Laboratory, the NCS is poised to strengthen its enforcement capabilities and contribute to a safer and more secure trading environment in Nigeria.
