The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Hammed Adeniyi, has announced the establishment of a state-of-the-art Customs Analytical Laboratory aimed at bolstering trade integrity and ensuring public safety. The laboratory, equipped with advanced technological infrastructure, will play a pivotal role in conducting thorough assessments to ascertain the legitimacy, composition, quality, and safety of goods passing through customs checkpoints.

CGC Adeniyi underscored the significance of this initiative, expressing confidence that the analytical laboratory would substantially enhance the Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS) capacity to safeguard public health, safety, and economic interests by curbing illicit trade practices. He emphasized the critical role of technology in modernizing customs operations and ensuring compliance with international trade standards.

Furthermore, CGC Adeniyi revealed ongoing discussions between the NCS and the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC) to streamline export processes and enhance efficiency. With the establishment of a specialized technical committee, the NCS aims to facilitate exports in line with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of economic diversification and increased revenue generation from non-oil exports.

The CGC emphasized the timeliness of these initiatives ahead of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) launch on April 30, 2024. Recognizing public concerns regarding customs documentation verification, CGC Adeniyi assured stakeholders of the NCS’s commitment to transparency and accessibility. He announced plans to introduce user-friendly application portals for customs paperwork verification, ensuring stakeholder convenience and efficiency.

Moreover, the NCS is actively aligning with broader government efforts to enhance port operations, including the implementation of a Single Window system championed by the Minister of Finance. CGC Adeniyi disclosed plans to establish a steering group for the Single Window System’s implementation, signaling the NCS’s proactive approach to embracing modernization and improving trade facilitation processes.

In conclusion, the unveiling of the Customs Analytical Laboratory marks a significant milestone in the NCS’s commitment to enhancing trade integrity, public safety, and operational efficiency. With cutting-edge technology and collaborative partnerships, the NCS aims to uphold international trade standards, combat illicit trade activities, and promote sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.
