The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has given the green light for a significant surge of 340% in electricity tariff for customers classified under Band A.

According to Musliu Oseni, Vice Chairman of NERC, customers in Band A will now be charged N225 per kilowatt-hour, a substantial increase from the previous rate of N66. Oseni made this announcement during a press briefing held in Abuja on Wednesday.

Band A customers, who benefit from 20 hours of electricity supply daily, constitute 15% of Nigeria’s total 12 million electricity consumers.

Furthermore, Oseni revealed that the commission has reclassified some customers from Band A to Band B due to their failure to meet the required hours of electricity supply stipulated by the electricity distribution companies. Currently, there are 800 feeders categorized as Band A, a number that the commission aims to reduce to under 500.

Despite this adjustment, approximately 17% now qualify as Band A feeders, serving only 15% of the total electricity customers connected to the feeders.

Oseni clarified that the commission’s April supplementary order permits a 235-kilowatt-per-hour supply but assured that the tariff review would not affect customers in other bands.
