The 37-member tripartite committee on minimum wage, established by the Federal Government, is set to reconvene in mid-April to resume negotiations and consultations on the anticipated new minimum wage. Hakeem Ambali, the National Treasurer of the Nigeria Labour Congress and a member of the committee, disclosed this during an interview in Abuja. The committee is currently collating and analyzing reports from zonal public hearings conducted across the country’s six geo-political zones.
The minimum wage, expected to be announced by President Bola Tinubu on May 1, 2024, aims to mitigate the impact of the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit. The public hearings revealed varying suggestions from different zones, ranging from N485,000 to N850,000. Ambali emphasized the ongoing compilation and analysis of these reports, indicating the next committee meeting will take place in mid-April. The committee, comprising representatives from federal and state governments, the private sector, and organized labor, was established following Vice President Kashim Shettima’s directive on January 30, 2024, to recommend a new national minimum wage before the expiration of the current N30,000 minimum wage.
