Akwa Ibom: Residents Demand Compensation Over Land Seizure

Residents of Anua Offot, Use Offot, and Ifa Ikot Okpon communities in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have accused the state government of taking over their land without fulfilling compensation agreements. Under the banner of Concerned Land Owners, they demand that the government honor its commitment and pay the agreed-upon compensation for the acquired land.

Mr. Power Anthony, the president of the group, revealed that despite an agreed compensation of N100 million, the government only disbursed N13.1 million. He lamented that residents were forcefully evicted from their homes without prior notice, with houses demolished and household items destroyed.

The communities allege that Governor Umo Eno, then Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources, made promises during negotiations but failed to fulfill them upon assuming office. Despite signing an agreement and receiving a partial payment, the landowners claim that the government reneged on its commitments.

The situation has led to the displacement of residents and the destruction of properties. Gabriel Anderson, a native of Use Offot, expressed dismay over the government’s actions, labeling it as impunity.

In response to the allegations, Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Captain Iniobong Ekong (Rtd), denied knowledge of the situation. He urged the media to publish the report, indicating a willingness to address the issue if brought to his attention.
