The Nigerian government, along with other countries, is closely observing as Germany legalizes recreational cannabis, becoming the largest member of the European Union to do so.
The law, which came into effect on April 1st, permits adults over the age of 18 to possess up to 25 grams of dried cannabis and grow a maximum of three marijuana plants at home. Public consumption is allowed, with restrictions such as avoiding visibility to children and proximity to sports facilities.
However, consumption is prohibited in pedestrian zones during specified hours. Furthermore, private clubs with up to 500 members will be allowed to collectively grow cannabis and distribute it among their members starting from July 1st.
Health Minister Karl Lauterbach championed the policy, citing the failure of previous drug policies and the proliferation of the black market. While the initial proposal for licensed shop sales was abandoned due to EU opposition, there is still consideration for a trial of shop sales in pilot regions.
