The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has underscored the crucial importance of bridging the energy access gap for driving economic prosperity in Nigeria. Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, emphasized this point during a keynote address at the 2024 edition of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum (SPE OLEF) held in Abuja.

Kyari highlighted NNPC Ltd’s commitment to developing the necessary infrastructure to deliver oil and gas across Nigeria, aiming to stimulate prosperity for Nigerians. He stressed that the company’s dedication to enhancing gas infrastructure was not merely a statutory requirement but a genuine effort to ensure energy security beyond fuel supply.

The CEO listed various infrastructural projects undertaken by NNPC Ltd, including the Obiafu/Obrikom/Oben (OB3) and Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipelines, designed to bolster the nation’s gas supply network. Additionally, he mentioned NNPC Ltd’s endeavors to expand gas supply to the international market through projects like the NLNG Train 7 and initiatives for floating LNG.

Kyari called for support in leveraging Nigeria’s abundant gas resources for economic prosperity, emphasizing the importance of addressing access gaps in electricity and clean cooking fuel. He assured stakeholders and investors of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the gas revolution.

Engr. Salahuddeen Tahir, Chairperson of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council, highlighted the critical role of energy in modern society and stressed the need for a diversified and sustainable energy transportation system to mitigate climate change and enhance energy security.

The SPE OLEF, in its 24th edition, aims to contribute to Nigeria’s oil and gas industry policy development, commemorating the first commercial oil discovery in Nigeria at Oloibiri, Bayelsa State, in 1956 by Shell D’Arcy.
