Mr. Olatunbosun Alake, the Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology in Lagos State, emphasized the vital role of youth contributions to the field of science and technology. His remarks were made at the prestigious 2024 Science Fair held at Mind Builders School in Omole Phase 2, Lagos.

Represented by Mrs. Remi George–Ashiru, the Deputy Director in the Ministry, Mr. Alake underscored the importance of engaging youths early in scientific endeavors, echoing the popular phrase ‘catch-them-young’. The fair, themed “Science is Life”, showcased a myriad of innovative projects by students, ranging from magnet-powered cars to eco-friendly insecticides and household-based demonstrations of erosion and rocket propulsion.

One standout project involved the ingenious use of orange peels to create a mosquito repellent solution, demonstrating the students’ ability to apply scientific principles to real-world challenges. Additionally, a Robotics Club captivated audiences with a model plane controlled from a robotics workstation.

The overarching objective of the fair was to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, aligning with global efforts to nurture future generations of scientists and engineers. A Science Fair Raffle Draw added an element of excitement, offering participants the opportunity to win coveted prizes.

Mrs. Bola Falore, the Education Director of Mind Builders School, highlighted the fair’s significance in cultivating curiosity, exploration, and innovation among students. She emphasized that by fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and discovery, the event not only celebrated current achievements but also laid the groundwork for a future where scientific excellence thrives.

As the event drew to a close, the Technical Selection Committee announced the top three projects—Toilet Wash Fizz Production, Tie-Dye Lamp, and Cleaning Agent Production—recognizing the creativity and ingenuity of the participating students.

The 2024 Science Fair stands as a testament to Lagos State’s commitment to nurturing young talents in science and technology, paving the way for a future where innovation flourishes and scientific excellence prevails.
