In a gathering with members of the Federal judiciary, President Bola Tinubu strongly condemned the reprehensible actions of kidnappers across Nigeria, advocating for them to be treated as terrorists. He made this declaration during a Ramadan dinner with Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, and other judicial officers.
Emphasizing the government’s commitment to combating banditry, the President labeled kidnappers as cowardly individuals who target vulnerable victims. He asserted that these criminals must face the same treatment as terrorists to effectively eliminate their activities.
During the event attended by serving and retired judicial officers, including former CJNs Justice Mahmud Mohammed and Justice Walter Onnoghen, President Tinubu addressed the need for salary reviews for judicial officers. He pledged ongoing reforms to enhance the welfare and working conditions of judges, acknowledging the challenges they face post-retirement.
Acknowledging the judiciary’s vital role in upholding the rule of law, President Tinubu expressed gratitude for their dedicated service to the nation. He underscored the importance of mutual support among branches of government to advance Nigeria’s progress.
In response, CJN Justice Ariwoola commended the President for hosting the Ramadan dinner, recognizing his commitment to judicial reforms and welfare improvements for judicial officers. He offered prayers for the success of the administration and lauded the appointment of 21 justices to the Supreme Court as unprecedented.
Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, expressed appreciation for the President’s executive bill aimed at enhancing the salaries and allowances of judicial office holders. He commended the President’s leadership and compassion, highlighting the significant increase in judges’ emoluments under his administration.
Fagbemi praised the President’s enduring commitment to judicial matters and thanked him for prioritizing reforms to strengthen the judiciary. He assured continued support for initiatives aimed at advancing the administration of justice in Nigeria.
