Nigeria Sets New Data Consumption Record; NCC Implements NIN-SIM Linkage Mandate

In January 2024, Nigeria witnessed an unprecedented surge in data consumption, reaching a record-breaking 721,522 terabytes, as reported by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). This milestone marks the highest data consumption in a single month since the inception of data statistics publication by the NCC.

Despite a slight decline in the number of internet users, which dropped by 1.9 million from December 2023 to January 2024, the surge in data consumption reflects a significant increase in online activities among Nigerians. The high data usage in January surpassed the previous peak observed in December 2023, attributed to heightened online engagements during the festive season.

Simultaneously, the NCC has taken proactive measures to enhance national security by mandating telecommunication operators to disconnect phone lines of subscribers who have not linked their National Identification Numbers (NIN) with their SIM cards. This directive aims to ensure compliance with the government’s initiative to combat criminal activities, such as banditry and kidnapping, through the NIN-SIM linkage process.

The NIN-SIM linkage initiative, which commenced on February 28, 2024, underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering national security and enhancing regulatory oversight in the telecommunications sector. The impending disconnections scheduled for March 29, 2024, serve as a pivotal step in enforcing adherence to NIN-SIM linkage requirements, with indications of a potential third phase in April 2024.

As Nigeria navigates the digital landscape amidst evolving security challenges, the surge in data consumption highlights the increasing reliance on digital platforms for communication, commerce, and information dissemination. The NCC’s efforts to regulate data usage and ensure compliance with regulatory directives reflect ongoing initiatives to foster a secure and resilient digital ecosystem in the country.
