Julius Abure has secured his position as the national chairman of the Labour Party (LP) after being re-elected at the party’s national convention in Nnewi, Anambra state, on Wednesday.

The declaration of Abure’s victory was made by Ikechukwu Emetu, the deputy governor of Abia state and chairman of the convention.

The convention saw the participation of party chairmen from all 36 states of the federation, representatives from the federal capital territory (FCT), members of state and national assemblies, as well as delegates from local government areas.

Abure’s re-election occurred amid previous protests by members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who had picketed the LP secretariat in Abuja a week earlier. The NLC members demanded the postponement of the party’s national convention, accusing Abure of financial mismanagement and disrespect toward the NLC leadership.

Despite these challenges, the convention proceeded with its agenda, which included the election of a new chairman, amendments to the party’s constitution, and the dissolution of the national working committee (NWC).
