The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has launched scathing allegations against the Joe Ajaero-led Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), asserting that they pilfered funds earmarked for staff salaries and other valuables during the recent assault on the party’s national secretariat. Abure described the incident as shameful and characterized the leaders’ actions as blatant rascality.
The accusations follow the recent invasion of the Labour Party’s secretariat by leaders of the NLC, prompting an outcry from the party’s leadership.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the National Chairman condemned the NLC’s actions as an abuse of office and a violation of the law. He highlighted the unlawful takeover of the secretariat, destruction of property, and theft of millions of naira, including funds designated for staff salaries and official purposes.
Abure lamented the detrimental impact of the NLC’s actions on the party’s achievements in the 2023 general elections, warning that the NLC leadership under Joe Ajaero is jeopardizing the party’s progress.
In response to Abure’s allegations, Acting Chairman of NLC’s Political Commission, Professor Theophilus Udubuaku, dismissed the accusations as baseless and accused Abure of selective amnesia. Udubuaku emphasized that the picketing by the Ajaero-led NLC was a necessary action to reclaim the party’s headquarters from previous occupants. He refuted claims of theft, highlighting the presence of law enforcement officers and press during the picketing as evidence of transparency.
