In Abuja, a 36-year-old labourer, Terkaa Akishi, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for stealing two Qurans and a cell phone from a mosque in the Asokoro area.

The Grade 1 Area Court in Lugbe handed down the verdict on Tuesday, March 19, after finding Akishi guilty of trespass and theft. Though given the option to pay a fine of N40,000, Akishi opted for the prison sentence.

The prosecution, led by Mr. Emeka Ezeganya, revealed that Akishi unlawfully entered the mosque and stole the items, which were later recovered during police investigations.

The severity of the sentence highlights the court’s stance against theft and trespassing, particularly within religious premises, serving as a deterrent to potential offenders.
