A law that would provide widows and widowers with longer leave after losing their spouses has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives, which is a big step in the right direction toward helping bereaved families.

Sponsored by Saidu Abdullahi, who represents Bida/Katcha/Gbako Federal Constituency in Niger State, this proposed legislation aims to offer bereaved individuals the necessary time to mourn their loss and recover from the emotional trauma associated with it.

Abdullahi underscored the challenges faced by single parents and emphasized the importance of addressing the plight of those who have lost their partners.

The bill encompasses several key clauses, including defining eligibility criteria for the leave, specifying the duration of leave with full payment entitlement, and establishing penalties for any violations of the proposed law.

Abdullahi referenced widowhood legislation from other countries, citing examples such as India and the Philippines, where widows are entitled to paid leave. He also highlighted the discrepancy between existing bereavement leave policies in Nigeria’s public sector and prevalent cultural mourning practices, suggesting that a longer leave period may be more appropriate in alignment with cultural and religious norms.
