The Federal Government is scheduled to hold a meeting today with the leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU). This meeting comes amidst a seven-day nationwide strike initiated by SSANU and NASU to protest the non-release of their four-month salaries withheld by the government in 2021.
The strike was prompted by the government’s decision, under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, to withhold salaries as part of the “No work; no pay” principle due to the unions’ previous strike action.
Despite the current administration of President Bola Tinubu releasing the withheld salaries of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), SSANU and NASU were excluded from this action, leading to their dissatisfaction.
They had requested equal treatment and the release of their withheld salaries, but the government ignored their demands.
In response, SSANU and NASU commenced their strike, which began on Monday, resulting in the disruption of academic activities across university campuses nationwide. The upcoming meeting between the government and the union leadership offers hope for potential resolution and the end of the strike action.
