Senator Alli Sharafadeen Abiodun, representing Oyo South Senatorial District, has proposed naming one of the Senate Committee rooms after the late Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Mahood Olalekan Balogun.
Making the proposal under Order 41 of the Senate Rules, Senator Abiodun formally announced the passing of the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadan and sought the Chamber’s approval for the renaming.
However, the proposal elicited laughter from fellow Senators, who had just been discussing a motion about the killing of 16 soldiers. While the suggestion to rename the Committee room was met with amusement, it marks a unique gesture in the history of democracy.
Despite the laughter, a one-minute silence was observed in honor of the late monarch, who passed away on March 14, 2024, after a two-year reign as the Olubadan of Ibadan land.
