Professor Lucia Omobolanle Ogunsumi, a leading expert in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has advocated for a technological revolution in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. In her inaugural lecture titled “Farmers’ Peculiar Treasure: The Sustained Use of Technological Approach,” held at Oduduwa Hall, OAU, Ile-Ife, Professor Ogunsumi emphasized the importance of investing in Research and Development (R&D) to enhance food production in the country.
Identifying digital infrastructure development and education promotion as key components, Professor Ogunsumi highlighted the need for robust partnerships between public and private institutions. She stressed that supportive policies and knowledge exchange platforms are essential for fostering inclusivity and equity in technological agriculture.
Highlighting Nigeria’s abundant natural resources, including arable land, freshwater sources, coastal areas, and ecological diversity, Professor Ogunsumi underscored the country’s potential for diverse crop and livestock production, as well as forestry and fisheries opportunities.
Despite these resources, Professor Ogunsumi lamented the stagnation in agricultural production since 1970, leading to rising food prices and increased food importation due to a decline in domestic production. She called for urgent action to leverage technological advancements to address these challenges and drive sustainable agricultural development in Nigeria.
With over thirty years of socio-economic research experience at the Institute of Agricultural Research & Training (IAR&T), Professor Ogunsumi’s insights underscore the critical need for a transformative approach to agriculture to ensure food security and economic prosperity in Nigeria.
