Abuja, Nigeria, has garnered international attention for its air quality woes, landing the sixth spot in a recent report by IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company renowned for its global air-sensor data collection. The report reveals that the capital city grapples with high levels of PM2.5 pollution, joining the ranks of cities with the poorest air quality worldwide.

The top five cities with the worst air quality, according to the report, include New Delhi, Dhaka, Ouagadougou, Dushanbe, and Baghdad. Conversely, capitals boasting the lowest concentrations of PM2.5 pollution include Wellington, Reykjavik, and Hamilton.

PM2.5 pollution, a pervasive form of air pollution, poses significant health risks, surpassing other pollutants in its lethality. Glory Dolphin Hammes, CEO of IQAir’s North American division, underscores that fossil fuel combustion serves as a primary contributor to PM2.5 pollution, highlighting the urgency of addressing its sources.

Misbath Daouda, an expert in health equity and environmental justice at the University of California, Berkeley, underscores the grave health implications of PM2.5 pollution. She notes its ability to penetrate the respiratory system and bloodstream, leading to cardiovascular ailments, strokes, oxidative stress, and hindering brain development in children.

Despite concerted efforts by the World Health Organization to tighten pollution guidelines, PM2.5 pollution remains a pressing global concern. However, IQAir’s report offers glimmers of hope by highlighting progress in air quality improvement in countries such as China, Chile, and South Africa. By blending data from governmental sources and lower-cost sensors, the report provides invaluable insights into air quality, particularly in regions where deploying regulatory-grade monitors is impractical.
