A federal high court in Abuja has dismissed a suit brought by Olu Agunloye, former minister of power and steel, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Agunloye had claimed a breach of his fundamental human rights by the EFCC.
However, delivering judgment on Monday, Judge Obiora Egwuatu stated that the suit was an attempt by Agunloye to evade criminal investigation and interfere with the EFCC’s mandate to invite him for interrogation, as outlined in Sections 6 and 7 of the EFCC Act. The judge emphasized that there was no evident breach of the applicant’s rights to personal liberty and freedom of movement.
The EFCC is investigating Agunloye over his alleged involvement in a $6 billion Mambilla hydropower contract awarded to Sunrise Power in 2003.
